Adrienne Rich’s ‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers’ depicts a woman trapped within the cultural pressure and responsibilities of married life. She has knitted tigers on the tapestry in knitted wool. They seem to prance and jump over a screen. They are not afraid of men standing under the trees in the scenery. Even after her death her hands will remain terrified while the tigers of the tapestry will remain prancing with pride and fearlessness.

कविता ‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers’ एक प्रतीकात्मक छन्द है जो मानव अस्तित्व, उसका ध्येय व उसकी गरिमा के महत्वपूर्ण मुद्दे को विस्तारित करता है। एक बूढी, कमजोर औरत, जो अपने परिवारिक दायित्वों व पत्नी-धर्म के बोझों तले दबी है, उसने एक ऐसा जीवन व्यतीत किया है जिस पर उसका कभी-भी नियंत्रण नहीं रहा। वह इनसे बचने का एक रास्ता अपने कशीदाकारी के काम में पाती है जिसमें वह कपड़े पर चित्र उकेरती है। यहाँ वह वही सब कुछ रचने के लिए स्वतंत्र है जो वह सदैव स्वयं में चाहती थी। उदाहरणतया वे बाघ जो ताकतवर तथा रोबीले हैं-जैसा वह स्वयं कभी नहीं बनसकती।

कविता ‘Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers’ हमारे समाज में पुरुष निरंकुश्ता को चित्रित करती है। इस विचार को समझाइए।
Answer:
Most societies across the world are male-dominated. Aunt Jennifer, a typical housewife, has to obey her husband’s orders slavishly. Her husband tyrannises her and she has accepted her fate meekly. however, she tries to ease her suffering by expressing her supressed feelings through the work of embroidery. She wishes to have the very qualities that tigers stand for. She wishes to be bold, proud and fearless just like the tigers she has created on her curtain.

संसार के अधिकतर समाज पुरुष प्रधान हैं । चाची जेनिफर एक सामान्य गृहिणी है। उसे उसके पति के आदेशों का दासतापूर्वक पालन करना पड़त है। उसका पति उस पर अत्याचार करता है और चाची ने उसकी नियति को समर्पण के भाव के साथ स्वीकार कर लिया है। किन्तु वह उसके अंतरमन की दबी हुई भावनाओं को कशीदाकारी के कार्य के माध्यम से व्यक्त कर स्थिति को आसान बनाने का प्रयास करती है। वह उन गुणों को स्वयं के लिए प्राप्त करना चाहती है जो बाघों में हैं। वह चाहती है कि वह उन बाघों के समान साहसी, अभिमानी तथा निर्भय बने जिन्हें उसने पर्दे पर बनाया है।

Answer:
The poet has made generous use of various symbols in the poem which are both apt and indicative. The tigers on the curtain, embroidered by Aunt Jennifer are symbols of courage, elegance, chivalry, self confidence, pride and fearlessness.

These qualities in the tigers contrast with their creator’s weaknesses, who is meek, timid, humble and diffident. Aunt’s trembling fingers symbolise her physical and mental weakenss. Her husband’s wedding band and rings symbolize his tyranny and cruelty.

कवयित्री ने इस कविता में विभिन्न प्रतीकों का प्रचुर रूप से प्रयोग किया है, जो उपयुक्त एवं सांकेतिक हैं। पर्दे पर बने बाघ, जिन्हें जेनिफर चाची ने कशीदाकारी से बनाया है, साहस, शालीनता, शौर्य, आत्मविश्वास, गर्व तथा निर्भयता के प्रतीक हैं। बाघों के गुण उनकी रचयिता की कमजोरियों के विपरीत हैं।

वह दब्बू, डरपोक, विनम्र तथा आत्मविश्वास से रहित हैं। चाची की काँपती हुई अँगुलियाँ उसकी शारीरिक एवं मानसिक कमजोरी की प्रतीक हैं। उनके पति की शादी का पट्टा तथा अंगूठियाँ उसकी निरंकुशता एवं निर्दयता की प्रतीक हैं।
